Detroit is a city in the north of the United States in Michigan . Located in the southeastern corner of the state , on the Detroit River , on the border with Canada. Its population is 708,452 people in 2011 , with suburbs 4,400,000 people.
The city was Founded on 24th of July 1701 by the French a manager Antoine Lome. Until the XIX century it was a member of Canada ( part of the British Empire) , then transferred to the United States.

Detroit is a city in the north of the United States in Michigan . Located in the southeastern corner of the state , on the Detroit River , on the border with Canada. Its population is 708,452 people in 2011 , with suburbs 4,400,000 people.

The city was Founded on 24th of July 1701 by the French a manager Antoine Lome. Until the XIX century it was a member of Canada ( part of the British Empire) , then transferred to the United States. In XX century the city became a major center for the automotive industry . In the second half of the century because of the gasoline crisis Detroit fell into disrepair , many of its factories closed , the population dispersed , leaving entire neighborhoods of the city abandoned. Nevertheless , Detroit is still the headquarters of the largest automakers .The city was on the Detroit River , which means strait of Lake Erie , which connects Lake Huron to Lake Erie.By 1765 , the white population of Detroit was 800 people. However, in 1760 Detroit was handed to the British and became part of the British colonial empire.After the Revolution, Detroit has long remained a Canadian town and moved to the United States only in 1796. In 1805 most of the Detroit burned in the fire . From 1805 to 1847 . Detroit was the capital of the territory , and then the new Michigan . At this time, its population has increased dramatically .On the eve of the Civil War Detroit was one of the key points " Underground Railroad " at which runaway black slaves made ​​their way from the U.S. to Canada. Lived here for a while the future president and then- Lieutenant Ulysses S. Grant , and during the war, many townspeople volunteers joined the army of northerners. Detroit was one of the first cities , where she built a network of highways and road junctions . In the 1950s, the cost of real estate has started to fall , jobs declined and people started to move to where there is effective demand.The city remained unemployed people and Detroit quickly gained notoriety as one of the "black" and dangerous cities in the United States. In 1967, this led to interracial conflict.In 1973 oil crisis erupted . It led to the bankruptcy of the U.S. auto factories .Despite the general decline of Detroit , there is still a collection of cultural and sports centers , as well as monuments of the past century and continues to attract tourists.Among fans of oriental sweets Dearborn famous for its baklava .July 18, 2013 in Detroit authorities declared bankruptcy the city due to the inability to pay debts amounting to $ 20 billion .
