Epidemie HIV se objevila na počátku 80. let minulého století jako nemoc určitých sociálních skupin. Zdálo se, že bude zasahovat jen malé procento obecné populace, ale za posledních 20 let se HIV stalo globální krizí a představuje jednu z největších hrozeb pro společenský pokrok a vývoj lidstva. V těch zemích, kde je nemoc rozšířená, ohrožuje epidemie vše, čeho bylo dosaženo v průběhu desetiletí, přináší utrpení pacientu a jeho rodině, hluboce ovlivňuje sociálně-hospodářské struktury společnosti, ničí její ekonomické, sociální, demografické struktury a ohrožuje samotnou existenci civilizace.
V červnu 1981 Američtí vědci zveřejnili první klinický případ nemoci, který se později stal známý jako syndrom získané imunitní nedostatečnosti neboli AIDS. Její důvod, virus lidské imunodeficience (HIV) byl zjištěn v roce 1983. Od té doby se epidemie AIDS rozšířila po celém světě a více než 60 milionů lidí je nakažených virem HIV.
