Let me introduce myself. My name is Gerasimova Vasilisa and I study at the fifth form. I like English very much, that’s why I have decided to take part in this scientific conference. The theme of my project is “Plants and animals as symbols of Great Britain”.

You know that every country has its own symbols and traditions and it was interesting for me to learn more about Great Britain and its history. So, each country in Britain has its own patron saint and floral emblem.

The symbol of England is red rose. It became the emblem after the war of roses in the 15th century. The war of roses was the war between the dynasties of the British throne. The war ended with marriage of Henry the 7th and princess Elisabeth, the daughter of Eduard the 4th.

The Lion is a national animal of England. Lion was the nickname of England's rulers with a reputation for bravery, such as Richard I, known as Richard the “Lion heart”.

The oak is the national tree of England, representing strength and endurance. The Major Oak is an 1000 year old oak in Sherwood Forest, it was hideout of Robin Hood.

The national flower of Scotland is the thistle. It saved the country from enemy. One of them stepped on a thistle and cried with pain. This alarmed the scots and the north men were put to fly.

The national flower of Wales is the daffodil and leek. The legends says that Sy. David stayed alive because he ate only bread and leek. The daffodil becomes the symbol of Wales because people believe that it flowers on the 1st of March, their patron’s day (St. David’s day).

The national flower of Northern Ireland is the shamrock. They say that their saint preached the doctrine of Trinity with the help of this plant.
